Mom fights the pro! by susanjoan@loveable.com In this episode, Mom finds out who trained Julie to beat her and then fights the teacher...a pro wrestler.. So...we had two glorious weeks on the beach in Ocean City NJ. Julie Frank and I were on a house right on the beach in this community which is just up the coast from where we live on the mainland. About a 20 minute drive, but a world away. The Sunday of week one we met the neighbors and we all became fast friends. Pat and Steve Munson live all year at the shore - Steve runs a health club on the mainland and Pat does the beach as she likes to say. We had drinks at each other's houses, went out and in to dinner together and generally had a great time with them. Things got interesting on the Monday night of week 2. Julie and Frank were planning a night on the town up in Atlantic City. They had dinner reservations at 7 at Trumps Marina and then tickets to a late show at Caesars and would be gone for the whole night. I planned a simple salad after a day at the beach and then a night with a good book and a glass or two of wine. That was till Steve and Pat heard about the kids' plans. They insisted that I join then as Steve had a huge steak he was going to grill and Pat had gotten some fresh Jersey corn and tomatoes at the farmer's market. Well, its hard to turn these folks down and so I said yes and joined them! We had a great dinner and then were on the deck about 8:30 drinking a glass of wine when Steve said he a really early morning meeting and was going to hit the hay. I tried to leave too but Pat said she'd be all alone finishing the bottle of wine and didn't want to drink alone...would I stay? I said sure and we had a great time finishing that bottle and working our way through the next. Pat was saying how glad she was to meet me and that she was so happy that Julie looked happier then she had in months. I was very puzzled by this remark until Pat explained that Julie had spent several months with them over the winter and that she'd been the one to work on Julie's fighting skills. I was very surprised and asked her many questions including what she'd done with Julie and how had she known what to do? This is the story that Pat told me. She grew up in a little town in the Pacific Northwest (Grants Pass, Or). She was a big athletic girl but not much of a student. She had a passion for roller skating and had since she was 5 and learned. She'd summered as a car hop on skates (talk about a long time ago) at a local drive in the last summer but as a high school graduate she couldn't see that in her future. College was out and she was really stumped till one day she saw a story about a Roller Derby team that was being put together in Klamath Falls. It was to be a summer league of the then popular sport who's main teams were located in California. (Roller Derby was a real staple of TV back in the late 60s and early 70s. Men and women's teams rolling around a track in "heats" with one of each team the scorer and the rest of the team the blockers. Real physical action and a hell of a lot harder than skating at the local rink...of which there also was many back then) She'd seen it on TV a lot and drove to the try outs and got a job. $100 a week and traveling expenses in the late 60's wasn't bad. She had a great summer traveling around to small Oregon and Washington State towns and as she was big, blonde and young, became a star of sorts on the girls team. In October when the team's season ended she returned to town and took an office job. This was not her cup of tea and only lasted till the holidays. In January she took a waitress job in a local coffee shop. She could take the occasional ass grabbing better than the office routine but when she got a call from the team owner next April she was ready to go. This time she helped with the selection of players and the training and was again a great success in this small league. In late September her friend Peggy came to her with an add from the Eugene paper looking for male and female wrestlers for a local promoter. Hell, they said that Roller Derby was really wrestling on skates and Pat had been in some nasty fights both on and off the track in the past couple of years so she figured what the hell. The try outs were on an off day the girls had and they drove to Eugene. Only a few women showed up and the girls Roller Derby credits did them well so they were accepted. Following their last game, the promoter sent them off to the Mildred Burke wrestling school and they learned the way to play the game! Within two months they were competing around the Northwest circuit and winning and losing as the matches went on. Pat was adamant that they were not silicone boob jobs like today's female "wrestlers". Wrestling was a much different sport then and the fights were real and the effort and skills mush better. She mostly fought the local talent but had met stars such as Anne Casey, Sherri Lee, Marie Vagione and even the Fabulous Mula in the ring (my older brother was really into wrestling when I was in my teen years and all these names were very familiar too me. I think many of my ideas about women fighting came out of watching those fights with my brother and seeing the effect the women had on him. I'd often fantasized about fighting some of these real lady wrestlers (real ladies and real wrestlers! Pat had lived out my dream of fighting these kinds of pro wrestlers!). There was a man and his son in Portland who promoted in the local area and the son seemed to have a thing for Pat. Well that son turned out to be Steve and when he took over the promotion game from his Dad, he made his moves on Pat. Soon after they married and had 3 kids along the way. She continued to wrestle and tour the area until the kids came along. Then she turned into super mom and would occasionally wrestle on a local card so she could stay home. She'd fight on her husband's promoted cards as the promoter's wife which seemed to have a great pull for the local fight fan. Mostly it was against local talent but again she'd occasionally fight a national wrestling name and that was a huge gate draw as she was something of a local celeb to the wrestling fans in Portland. Looking at her today in her early 50s I can only imagine her 20 years ago. A big blonde bombshell and the bosses wife...must have been a great local draw! She continued to fight through the 80s but in the early 90s the business changed and Steve got out of it and so did she. Steve's father had owned a couple of gyms and Steve worked turning them into "health clubs" and was very successful. Pat would work from time to time doing some weight training classes and the like and would occasionally get a call to do a charity wrestling gig at a local Knights of Columbus or the like. A couple of years ago they sold the chain of clubs in Oregon for a tidy profit and were looking for a new life. The kids had scattered and since Steve had grown up on the east coast before his Dad moved the family to Oregon they decided to come back here. They always loved the ocean and Steve had some great childhood memories of the Jersey Shore and that's where they ended up. Steve's got a new club in Sommer's Point that he opened a year ago and Pat loves the beach. After telling me the story over a 3d bottle of wine. Pat turned to me and said, "You know...Julie wants us to fight. That's the main reason for this whole vacation." Now I'm thinking...here's this woman who's about my age (she's 52) and who was a roller derby queen and a lady wrestler who fought with some of the greats in the field and I'm supposed to fight her? I know it was nuts, but my juices (or the wine) was flowing in my veins and I really wanted to try...but would I have a chance?? "How many fights did you and Julie have while she was training?", I asked her. "12" "and how many did you win?" "all of them" Now again, here is a woman who trained my daughter to come home and beat me. Here is a woman who fought my daughter 12 times and never lost. Am I nuts??? "Look Su", Pat said, "I know you think you may be over matched but what if you pick the fight?" This remark about being over matched pissed me off (even though I was overmatched by a long shot) and I said, "have you done much boxing?" "Just some exercise boxing", she replied "How about 10 2 minute rounds with 2 minute rest periods?" And we agreed to that. We'd fight on Thursday evening at the Sommer's Point club at about 9:30 (it closes at 9). Bathing suits for us. Julie would ref, Steve would work Pat's corner and Frank would work mine! Pat is 52, stands 5 foot 8, long blonde hair, weighs 180 and has a 44d-30-35 figure.....imagine that in a black scoop neck bathing suit in a pair of boxing gloves in the ring! So we all drove to the club on Thursday evening in Steve's Lincoln. Steve helped Pat into her gloves while Frank laced up mine. Pat was wearing a black scoop neck bathing suit with blue trim...looked every part the 60-70 pro wrestler. I was wearing a white V neck suit that I found very comfortable. Julie was in the skimpiest yellow bikini she owns...really little more than a thong and a couple of pieces of wispy cloth that just covers her nipples - Pat and I considered double teaming her after her choice of clothing but decided to work on each other instead! Steve set up the auto timekeeper at ring side and when the bell rang we were off in the first round! Lots of foot action and a few punches thrown as we both "felt out" our opponent. For a big woman Pat was very light on her feet and you knew that she had been very athletic at one time. She still was formidable in the ring and I could well imagine what she must have been like when she wasn't as thick in the middle. Two minutes went pretty fast and as the bell rang neither of us had really made much of an impact. Round two started as I moved out of my corner and quickly got into Pat's face. I hit her with a right left combo to her head that she blocked but then surprised her with a solid right to her side that she really felt. She danced away from it but I knew that she'd taken notice. I moved on her again and this time was able to connect with a right to the side of her head and then a solid one two punch to her stomach followed my a right uppercut that caught her chin and dumped the bigger woman on the canvas. I was shocked that I had scored the first knockdown and was a bit slow getting back to my corner so Julie could begin the count. She was on 4 going to 5 when Pat strung to her feet. I was able to get in another body blow before the round ended and I returned to my corner. Felt pretty good after this round as I really wondered how tough Pat was going to be with boxing gloves. Not to be cocky but I now thought I at least had a chance to come out on top. As the bell sounded to start round three I was up and in her face once again. I connected with a couple of body shots but nothing to the extent that I had in round two. Although I was still making contact she seemed to get out of the way of the really hard stuff and I was not able to make the inroads I'd been able to in round two. I'd still have to give round three to me as she never touched me but I didn't think round three had the impact on the fight that round two had had! Round four stared with some dancing again by both of us as we traded useless blows but at about 1 minute into the round I made contact with a solid right to her side that really seemed to affect Su. After that shot, I was able to connect with a couple of more decent body shots and then a right left right combo to her head. She danced away a bit after that and threw a couple of ineffective shots to my face but then I was able to connect with a solid right to her stomach and then a left uppercut to her jaw that dumped her first on the ropes and then onto the canvas. I was sure to get to a neutral corner ASAP but unfortunately Julie had only gotten to a 4 count when the bell sounded and the round ended. Score another round for Su in my mind!!! I was quick out of my corner as round five started and moved at her perhaps a bit too fast and too cocky as Pat stopped me dead in my tracks with a right to my stomach that I never even saw. She followed this with a left right head combo that had me down on the canvas. I literally saw stars and by the time I knew what was going on I heard Julie counting "7, 8" and I crawled to my feet by her 9 count just barely saving the fight. I knew, however that we still had a good part of round 5 to go and I needed to stay out of trouble! I took a couple of punches at Pat but knew they weren't finding the target as I tried to clear my head and stay out of her way. With a series of right left combos Pat backed me into the corner and then hit me with a right upper cut that draped me across the ropes. This time it was Pat who stayed around too long and by the time Julie counted to 3 the round ended and I had been saved! Wow...what a difference a round makes, huh? Obviously this round didn't go to me and in reality I had been just saved by the bell because it was almost 20 seconds before I managed to get back to my corner. Frank was on me as soon as I made it back saying, "Babe..another round like that and she's going to have this thing. You need to go after her in this next round. You need to target her tits!" I had to agree with Frank. She'd come very close in this round and I was hurting. I did need an advantage and if I managed to take the fight to those 44Ds of hers then I would do that. Time to mix in some cat fighting in this boxing match and play the tit card. Round six found me moving on Pat with great trepidation! I needed to make my move but if she got to me before I got to her...well it might be all over before I got to execute my plan. After about 30 seconds of the round I finally saw my opening. Pat lunged at me with a right that really had no chance of going anywhere. I saw my opportunity because the way she'd thrown this punch totally opened up her tits to me. I pounded first a left then a hard right into her chest totally surprising the bigger woman and stopping her in her tracks. I followed up with a left upper cut that raised her tits and then I plowed a hard right directly into her cleavage! This last move draped Pat across the ropes and as soon as I got to a neutral corner Julie started a count. She was up again by a 6 count and I moved in again to complete the attack. This time she was guarding her boobs which was fine to me because now I got to send some very hard blows to her stomach! Mixing signals like this had Pat totally confused and when she brought her guard down to her body I obliged with a hard right to her left breast and then popped a left to her right breast. Again the guard went up to her tits and again I pounded her mid section doing some real damage with a roundhouse right to her kidneys that I thought was going to drop her. A couple of more small blows to her body and the bell sounded ending round six with both of us on our feet but with Pat in much worse shape that she was when the round started! As round seven started you could tell we were both getting tired! Over 12 minutes of hard action had taken its toll on both of us and neither Pat nor I had the same bounce we'd had earlier. Pat did a much better job covering up during the first half of this round and I was frustrated several times as I tried to close on her for the kill. Neither of us could gain any advantage and I was frankly disappointed because after round six I thought I might be able to put her away in round seven! With about 30 seconds to go I guess I tried too hard and managed to open my body up. Pat plowed a hard right to my stomach and then hit me with a left upper cut squarely in my chest. Almost unable to respond, she had a pretty much free reign for the rest of the round and continually pounded my tits with hard (and I mean hard) punches, finally double punching them just as the bell sounded. Julie had to get between the two of us to stop Pat's assault and it really seemed Pat was intent on finishing me off right then and there! Back in my corner Frank told me what I already knew "Hey Babe...this bitch is killing you. You gotta pound her tits in this round or its over." No shit Sherlock! I got top my feet slowly and as round 8 started I moved out as well as I could. Without the benefit of icing, my tits were still on fire and all I wanted to do was get through this round with out Pat pounding on them again! Alas, that was not to be! As soon as we were in range, Pat started throwing punches at me, connecting with several body blows. I guess I dropped my guard, because Pat pounded a couple of hard ones into my chest and then a punch I never saw connected with my head! The next thing I remember was hearing Julie count "9 - 10" Pat had taken the fight in Round Eight with a knock out!
