She realized that she didn't sleep much last night as she kept waking up and having strange fits of imaginings, almost unwillingly. They were about her long strung desire to have massive muscles, namely biceps. But she kept telling herself each time more firmly than the last, "No! This will stop here and now!". But what she didn't realize was that she had carried on this fantasy for so long that she literally had a psychological addiction to it. She couldn't stop thinking about it. And until now, it was under control and never interfered with her work and her friends. But as she tried to carry on with her daily life while pushing away her secret desire, she found that it just forced its way into her mind whether she wanted it or not. Soon, she started slacking off at work. Her friends also started to notice her staring off into space a lot. And though they didn't say anything, she knew they were starting to see her as weird. One day, at work, her boss pulled her aside. "Look Sally. You've been such a wonderful asset to this company, but lately you've been seen standing around. that's not like you." her boss told her. She struggled real hard to maintain her composure, "You're right, I'm sorry. I've been going through a personal hardship with my family and it's been difficult for me to get things done." she lied. The manager kept his gaze, "Listen. Whatever problems you're having, you can't take them with you to work like this. And I hate to say this, but if you can't sort out your personal issues, then I will have to let you go. This kind of behavior cannot be tolerated here. This is your only warning. Either settle your problems, leave them at home when you come to work, or find yourself another job." Hearing this seemed to finally bring Sally back to her senses, the persistent longing to be big and strong finally subsided. She had to grow up. She knew that her job was the most important thing going for her. She knew many people would give an arm and a leg just to have her position. She had a newfound determination to live a normal life and seeing as she still had to get over her addiction, she decide to make herself not watch Popeye anymore. She knew that as long as she kept watching it, her mind would always interfere and it could very well be her downfall. Boy was she ever in for the surprise of her life! A few days later, as she was taking a walk and getting some air, she made her way into a park and sat down for a few minutes to watch a football practice session going on nearby. At first, she really wasn't paying attention to anything in particular; just watching the players go back and forth with the plays. But without realizing it, she started seeing the strength these players used to power their way through several others when that player was in possession of the ball. She quickly realized that her mind was starting to mess with her again and shook it off. It seemed like anything she saw involving sports, work, or even play evoked that desire in her. But she wanted to shake it off for good. She decided to get up and leave. But just as she started to get up, a voice startled her from behind making her yelp. "Oh geez, don't ever sneak up on me like that!" she yelled at the stranger. "Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you. I just wanted to know if I could just sit here and talk to you for a few minutes?" he said. Normally, Sally wouldn't just talk to strangers out of the blue. She tended to be a reserved woman and other than her other friends, she kept to herself. But as she got a look at this guy for the first time, some odd feeling came over her; compelling her to stay. He seemed strangely familiar. He looked to be in his upper sixties, only a few stray hairs, and a face that seemed like it saw its share of beatings. He looked rather thin, though his forearms seemed a bit pronounced. But other than that, he seemed like a rather frail old man. She had this mysteriously knowing feeling that he was no threat to her. And seeing as there were lots of people scattered around the park, she knew someone would see him if he tried anything. "Um, okay. But mind if we went over to that empty pavillion?" Sally asked. If she was going to talk to this man, it would be out of earshot of anyone around. "Yeah, sure miss...?" "My name is Sally." "Pleased to meet you Sally. Shall we?" And they both walked over to the bench under the pavillion. It was situated near the edge of the park. There were still people nearby enough to be able to see them, but they were absorbed in other things. The mysterious stranger sat across from her and leaned forward and rested his arms on the table. "I'm really not sure how you'll take this. You may even think I'm crazy. But I just ask that you hear me out on this." he insisted. Sally started to feel a bit nervous, but kept her composure, "Well, alright. Besides, who's sane these days? Hehehe." She half giggled. The man just smiled and relaxed his demeanor, "Thank you. To be honest, I wasn't sure I'd ever find anyone who could handle this. You see, I'm a retired Navy veteran. I've seen just about every square inch of this world. I can honestly say that I've lived a fulfilling life. I've achieved things that no other person has ever done before. And for that, I am satisfied with my life. Unfortunately, I don't have much longer to live..." he stopped himself midsentence. Sally was confused, "Why are you telling me this? You don't know me and I don't know you. So why are you telling me something that would be more appropriately suited for a member of your family?" The man's expression turned to one of sadness, "Unfortunately, what's left of my family is no longer in contact with me. And those that I would be telling this to are already dead. But this...this is sign I was waiting for! You're the perfect one to carry on my legacy for the new generation!" he said with greater urgency. Sally was starting to feel a bit of panic, but she still felt like she had to see this conversation through, "What are you talking about?" He instantly blurted out, "SPINACH!" A couple people nearest them turned their heads in their direction which Sally noticed with embarrassment, but to her relief, they turned away again and resumed their activities. She turned back toward him, "How do you know about that!? Were you spying on me or something?!". She was angry. "No! No! I swear it was nothing of the sort!" he pleaded. "Quite the opposite actually. You see, I was taking a walk through your neighborhood and as I was passing by your apartment, I happened to overhear your screams about wanting to sprout muscles from eating spinach." He paused for a moment as he could clearly see Sally's face turning red with embarrassment. "Please Sally, don't be embarrassed. I beg of you, please don't feel embarrassed around me. I'm not laughing at you nor is this a joke." Sally wanted to respond, but no words were coming out. She was was simply too stunned to say anything at the moment. The man pressed on, but lowered his voice so no one else would be able to hear. "As I was saying, you're the perfect person; the perfect woman to carry on my legacy. You see many of my achievements are thanks to spinach. Like you, I too shared an idolization of Popeye. But it goes farther than that. One day, many years ago when I was around your age, I met this certain fellow who was a highly accomplished construction worker for a company that I can no longer remember the name of. He was taking his lunch and something compelled me to talk to this man. I couldn't explain it. It was just a random conversation; you know how it is. And like you, most people wouldn't just say anything more than hello and such to a complete stranger. But he just sat down and agreed to chat with me. Without realizing why, I found myself telling him about my aspirations to join the Navy. I also told him about my hobby of weight lifting and wanting to be as strong as I could be so I could really make a difference in this world." The man paused a moment to let Sally take it all in. She was all ears now, "Please go on. You got my attention." The man smiled once again and continued, "Well when I told him all of that, after a pause where he seemed to be contemplating what I said, he reached into his bag and pulled out a packet of what seemed like ordinary raw spinach. He told me to eat it after I got home. He just said he didn't need it anymore. He made me promise to never ever share this secret with anyone until after I retire and then only after I found someone who was worthy enough to pass it on to. I wanted so badly to tell my family, and even one of my rivals the real secret to my achievements. But it would be years still before I would retire and I was compelled in a personal way to keep that promise no matter what." He paused for another brief moment. "Believe me, this was a lot to take in. I was confused and even suspicious about his motives. But something made me feel like I should trust him. I took the packet from him when he pulled a small pouch out of his pocket containing a single tiny seed. He told that once I did retire, to plant this seed, water it well, and let it grow to full maturity. I thought he was crazy. No seed could last that long. But he seemed to know I'd react like that and insisted that this was a very special seed that could withstand the test of time. He said that once it was fully grown and ready to pick, it would produce one; maybe two tiny seeds of the same kind. He made it clear that I was to pluck those seeds and put them in a small pouch like the one he gave me. He told me to keep it safe and guard it all my life and even with my life. And you know what that seed would grow into?" Without hesitation, Sally knowingly answered, "A spinach plant. But what's the difference? Spinach may be nutritious, but it doesn't actually give you muscles like the show would have you think." The man's smile widened, "Oh this was no ordinary spinach my dear. I came to realize why he swore me to secrecy real quickly. After telling me to eat it, he said that from that point on, any other spinach out there that I eat will have the same effect that no other person will be able to have. I asked him what this spinach that he gave me would do when I eat it, but he got up and told me he had to return to work. He said to just wait and see. He warned me not to ever let myself get carried away with it and to eat spinach only when it was needed. I guess that was the one risk he was taking with me. And with that, he took a bite of some spinach of his own and walked back to the construction site. I didn't see anything happen to him, and I thought I was losing my mind letting myself be lead into doing this. But as I started to walk away, I looked back just in time to see him turning a corner out of sight. But I thought my eyes were deceiving me because I could've sworn I saw him carrying a steel beam over his shoulder. The ridiculousness of it was such that it didn't even click in my head at the time and I just shook it off and went home." Sally's attention was completely hanging on every word being said at this point. "After getting home, I was hungry and pushed all other thoughts out of my head for the moment while I ate dinner. Afterwards, I went to sit down when I reached in my pocket and pulled out the spinach packet and the seed pouch. I thought of everything that guy said, but I still wasn't convinced he was being serious. And for a minute there, I started thinking this was all just some twisted joke he played on a younger naive person. But seeing as I still had a little room left in my stomach, I thought what the hell! I set down the seed pouch and opened up the spinach packet. I smelled it first and ran it under water. Nothing seemed wrong with it. So without further hesitation, I downed it all as fast as I could. What happened to me next changed my life forever. After just a few seconds after swallowing it all, I felt this huge weight just appear in my chest and shoot all the way down to my feet and shot right back up and into my arms, forcing them to stretch all the way out to my sides. And without even thinking I flexed them and saw to my shock and amazement two biceps, that were unlike anything I ever seen before on any person bar none, rip right through my sleeves like they were paper and rise up to as high as my clenched fists. But that was nothing compared to how incredibly strong I felt. It was as if someone put the power of a high-power generator into my biceps, one in each one! I felt so strong all over, but it was the biceps that surged with the bulk of that power. Immediately, I had to know if this was real. I looked for the heaviest thing I could find and saw this safe that was in the next room that took a lot of heavy-duty equipment to move into the place. It had to weigh in excess of a thousand pounds. I have never been able to even lift it even an inch. Even trying to push it along the floor was impossible. I reached down and grabbed it underneath and tried to stand up. It was as if I was lifting a cup. It felt so light that I let go and held it in the air with just one hand. And while I was doing so, I felt the surge of strength flowing through me like an out-of-control river. I never felt so alive in my life! I knew that if what everything that man said was indeed true, I'd have plenty of chances to explore the depths of this amazing strength. But I humbled myself and reinforced my promise to do as he said." He paused to take a deep breath. "Is it also true that the effects of the spinach are temporary?" Sally asked. "Yes, it's usually always enough time to get the job done. But it was important that I learned not to place to much reliance on the spinach. I continued working out and getting into the best shape of my life. I went on to join the Navy and become a sailor. It was the best way to explore the world. I moved up in the ranks until I was where I wanted to be. But even though I could've advanced further, I had no desire to take a desk job. No, being out there in the world was where the excitement was and everyone else knew it. The rest is history." The man said with nostaliga. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small sandwich bag that had raw spinach in it. He also reached into another smaller pocket and pulled out a pouch that had two small seeds in them. Sally eyed the contents with wonder as he eyed them himself. "Yes, you seem like a most passionate woman who can make a difference in this world. I'm not sure how I know this. It had to be the same with that construction worker. He seemed to just know I could be trusted to handle this properly. And now I have that same assurance about you." he said. He slowly held out both the items and Sally took them. But the man didn't immediately take his hands off them as he got a stern look on his face. "Remember everything I said. This spinach will alter your physiology to respond in the same way to any type of spinach you eat in the future. Your personality will also change, hopefully like me, for the better. You'll be the first woman to receive this gift so it may have a different effect on you, but it will be a good one either way, I promise you." he said, then finally let go. Sally looked at the spinach with a renewed excitement she could barely contain. The man continued, "Rather than tell you to go home before eating it, I think...so you can have a more memorable first time than I did, why don't you go somewhere isolated. There are some hills not far from here with huge boulders laying around. You can eat the spinach there." He smiled, "Yes, this will certainly make for a good first time. But no matter what, keep the seeds safe. This is something you can't pass on to anyone any other way. Those seeds are the only way. Plant them when once you retire and keep your eyes open. You will surely find someone you'll know is worthy enough to carry on my legacy. Promise me you'll keep this an absolute secret until that day comes." Sally slowly nodded, "Alright, you have my word. I promise, no one will ever know." And with that, the man stood up and began to walk away. Sally called after him. "Hey wait! Um, do images appear in your biceps when you flex them?" He looked back and chuckled a bit, "Of course not. That show just exaggerates a little bit for dramatic effect, but it was still a nice touch." he said with a wink. He started to turn away again, but hesitated, "Oh and by the way. I strongly suggest you join a gym or do something to workout. Do it regularly. Because after your first time, and you go back to your normal self, it will feel very unpleasant. Oh you may not feel it now. But after experiencing strength like Hercules and returning to as you are now, it will be very disconcerting to say the least. I trust you're an intelligent enough woman to not let yourself become dependent on the spinach. Trust instead in your natural physical achievements, and see the spinach as a last resort." He then walked off, leaving Sally still sitting there speechless. TO BE CONTINUED...
